The Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar joined an elite group of designated baby-friendly hospitals when they were presented with the Baby Friendly National Award this week.

NUI Galway has announced the appointment of the Republic of Ireland’s first Professor of Midwifery. Professor Declan Devane, himself a midwife, is based at NUI Galway’s School of Nursing and Midwifery. Some 21 admissions to the maternity unit at St Luke’s Hospital on Wednesday this week led to chaos on the ward, which saw up to seven women in beds on corridors.

A meeting held between HSE management and concerned local politicians to help allay mounting public fears that Portiuncula Hospital may be downgraded was positive but much still needs to be done to put people’s minds at rest.

“The HSE and Fianna Fáil must be honest with the people of Erris regarding the future of Belmullet Hospital,” according to Sinn Fein councillor Rose Conway-Walsh. “I categorically refute the claim by the HSE that Belmullet Hospital is not in crisis. Plans to close a significant number of the 40 beds in the hospital and failure to provide adequate staff to run the hospital to its full capacity is a crisis. While the whole hospital will not be closing at this time surely a downgrading of services will make it easier to close in the future,” she added.
